As I think of the many years Helen was my mother-in-law, I remember the way she always decorated her home so beautifully for Christmas. How she would bake us the best coconut cake for Easter, and even made us Easter baskets! The cozy holiday meals with just the three of us, the way she would include current events in her grace before meals.
The magical way so many pretty birds would come to her feeders, and all the profusion of flowers around the house. Lots and lots of varied Christmas cookies. Impressive paintings on the walls, though I never saw her painting them--sometimes one in progress would be on an easel, though. TV was to be turned off during meals--family time.
In her more active years, she was always off on bus trips--Grand Canyon, Canada, Mystery Destinations. Sometimes we would watch Baby, her Himalayan cat, whose portrait now hangs on our wall.
Later, when she had to stay home more, she got another Baby--this time a smart, affectionate black kitty. When she moved to assisted living, we took Baby 2, renaming her Sheba Baby, because she looks like the cat on the can of gourmet cat food.
In these years she got out the photo albums, and I realized what a full life she had lived--so many friends, so many milestone events. She kept making friends right to the end. And I'm sure they all will feel the loss of her fun-loving, generous, and loyal personality. Her Skechers will be hard to fill!
